Welcome to my reread of Kevin’s Hearne’s Iron Druid Chronicles. This is one of my favorite series of recent years, a rollicking good time with lots of bad-assery from the Iron Druid himself, Atticus O’Sullivan. Like most rereads, I will start with a summery of events in the chapter(s) I am covering and move on to some commentary.
I will be attempting to read as a writer and concentrate on looking at things I find interesting from that perspective. I will also hone in on aspects of Hearne’s writing that I might be able to learn from, either weaknesses in my own writing of something I want to emulate.
Spoilers will abound, of course. I’m not particularly good at remembering little details from the books I read (I have more of an emotional memory), but even I should be able to point out a few characters or incidents that will have importance later. So beware!
James Scott Bell suggested in one of his books to do a chapter by chapter analysis of novels in your genre. Since I want my Dakotashi series to feel most like an urban fantasy (even though it won’t include many of the standard tropes), that is why I’m starting with this series. The other is that I LOVE Kevin’s Hearne/Atticus’ voice. Expect much analysis on that aspect to ensue.
I’m doing this for my own growth and development as a writer, although I hope others will find it useful/enjoyable too. Feel free to comment.
