I admit I have a spotty history with watching Star Trek. I’ve only seen a few episodes of the original series. I never watched any of Enterprise. I watched some (maybe a lot?) of Voyager and Deep Space Nine. I did watch a lot of Next Generation and I remember looking forward to it each week. However, none of those experiences (if I remember correctly) came as close to how I felt watching Star Trek Discovery this season. It truly became one of the shows I most looked forward to every week and made sure I watched as soon as possible. I could go into a lot of detail about what I like about it, but this is supposed to be a Quick Take so I won’t. But I will say that the characters are awesome and I was surprised by a lot of the twists and turns of the season. I also watched After Trek right afterwards. The actors and people involved in the show are delightful and it really added to my experience. And since it wasn’t just fans talking to fans and speculating, but actual conversations with actors, writers, directors and producers, I really felt like I received real insight into the show. In conclusion, I loved this show and can’t wait for next season.

Quick Take: Mindhunter, Manhunt: The Unabomber, La Mante
I’m pairing these three programs together because they are all similarly about serial killers, they are all multiple episode tv shows, and are all available on Netflix.
Mindhunter goes back to the beginning of profiling of serial killers and focuses more on the task of developing a system for that rather than any one case, although there is one that is teased throughout. It started off a little slower, but then races forward as the main character, brilliantly played by Jonathan Groff (yes, King George III from Hamilton!), deteriorates. I found the show mesmerizing.
Manhunt: The Unabomber also focuses on one profiler, this time excellently played by Sam Worthington. He also deteriorates over the course of the series. And while this one takes place in the 1990s, and profiling has been around for awhile, he does help develop a new technique. It was a very intriguing story, especially since it was happening when I felt like I should remember stuff about it, but I really don’t.
Finally, La Mante, which is a French production with subtitles. It takes place today and follows a police detective who is convinced to work with his convicted serial-killer mother on copycat case of her crimes. It’s great. Lots of twists and turns. The woman who plays the mother is just amazing. I was really sucked in. If you haven’t you should give some of the subtitled shows on Netflix a try anyway, there are a lot of great options.
TV Addict
So now that most of the TV shows I watch have gone on hiatus and summer seasons haven’t started yet, I’ve gotten more actual editing done in the past few days than I have in weeks. I’ve been sporadically brainstorming and planning, but nothing consistent.
I have also subscribed to and started using this tool called AutoCrit, which so far I have found useful, if a bit overwhelming. I’ve looked at my first couple of chapters a lot, so later sections of my book are sure to have even more problems.
Anyway my lesson here is that I watch way too much TV. I’m much more productive when I don’t watch so much, which seems like a no-brainer, but I have a hard time resisting the shows I watch or a good Netflix binge.
Quick Take: Daredevil
I didn’t watch all the episodes in a row, but it was a close. I’m not really a comics person, but that has always been because of format, not content. I guess I prefer less pictures and more words. In a row. That said I’ve always loved superhero movies and anyone who knows me knows I enjoy the television adaptions as well. Arrow is my favorite show. That’s a long winded way of saying that I don’t know anything about the Daredevil mythology beyond the Ben Affleck movie. This show is much better than the movie.
Loved seeing how relationships between the characters developed. Thought they used the flashbacks very well to illuminate the characters. They do a great job interweaving the different characters and plot lines together. Cool references to the wider Marvel universe. The only reservation I had was I don’t love Matt as much as I love Oliver Queen and I wanted to. But I really really love Oliver Queen so that could be setting the bar too high given I’ve only seen half a season’s worth of episodes in comparison to Arrow.
I very highly recommend and am looking forward to future seasons.
Dakotashi Bennett and Oliver Queen: A Comparison
I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile. Ever since I realized that there were some remarkable similarities between the brooding hero of my own creation and my favorite superhero on TV. Some might think that I was influence by Arrow, but I thought of Dakotashi (Dakota) Bennett in 2010. The first novel was entirely written by the end of 2011. So it’s no wonder that I love Arrow so much. The show and its main character speak to my subconscious.
This is about to get long, folks. Also, spoilers for Arrow. Don’t read if you care about that.

Episode Review: Arrow’s “The Climb”
So I started out just wanting to do a quick take, but then it got too long so I decided to do a full review in a separate post.
Obviously, I’m still awake. Now that I’ve re-watched the episode again (and parts of it three times), I think I’m finally able to write some of my thoughts, in no particular order:
Big Thoughts
- I said this in my Quick Take, but it should repeated: amazing episode. Action-packed as usual. Emotional. And the end of was shattering. And surprising, shocking even (to me at least).
- Malcolm Merlyn is horrible. I didn’t think Barrowman’s Merlyn would be able to overcome Captain Jack (from Torchwood only) in my head, but he has. Good for him. Also Merlyn had to know Oliver would die, but was that his end goal or is there something bigger?
- The scenes where Oliver says his goodbyes to Thea and then to his team are heartbreaking. His words are confident, but his demeanor is…weary and sad. I think he expects to die. Even his posture right before the fight, a little slumped over, a haunted expression. If he were confident I would expect him to stand up straight, look determined and be angry. But he’s not. And yet, and yet–he does pack his bag of magical herbs (at least I think that’s what it was). Why would he need those if he knew he would die? And there is the presence of Maseo, the Lazarus Pit and of course the possibility of a larger plan from Malcolm. I just feel like the Lazarus Pit would be a cop out. But we’ll see what they do. I just expected a better showing from our hero during the fight. I mean honestly, he’s THE ARROW. And yet he was flailing about like Laurel trying to box Wildcat (forgive me the comparison!). Still an awesome fight though. My heart wants it to be part of some larger plan he has to trick Ra’s. Perhaps because I just watched the movie recently, Oliver’s whole demeanor reminded me of Aslan in the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. It’s not like Aslan didn’t know he was going to come back, but he was still…weary and sad as he walked to the stone table to sacrifice himself. Feel free to call me crazy.
- Hong Kong Oliver is really growing on me! I love his snarkiness. “Mind control. Really. That’s a thing?” Love it. And Stephen Amell’s facial expression? Perfect. He’s moved beyond the spoiled rich boy and so isn’t as annoying as I found Island Oliver to be sometimes, but hasn’t yet become the cold, killing machine we met in the preview. Current Oliver can be snarky too, but he has the weight of many things on his shoulders. Hong Kong Oliver is lighter somehow, even while learning to become an assassin and how to torture people.
- Felicity. Or should I say Olicity. Gone are the more lighthearted, easy-going interactions they had in the crossover (especially the Flash part). Felicity has always had her little aside comments. The island girls one when she found out about Shado is the one that pops immediately to mind. But her “I can think of one” to Ray when he says no man could regret kissing her, is more bitter than I am used to from her. But she doesn’t know what we know about Oliver’s progress this season. And although we know Oliver would NEVER regret kissing her, she is obviously reading the situation a different way. But tonight there are no more ambiguities. It’s not a declaration in reverse. “Don’t say..” It’s not “You know how I feel about her.” It’s not an intense look or a charged touch. Oliver says, “I love you,” straight out, while using the structure of Felicity’s “two things” speech from the end of last season. Just as he remembered she was chewing on a red pen when they met. He remembers everything. This is a devoted man. Perhaps she’ll believe it this time, which will then cause her to regret not saying it back before he “dies.” Of course, if it turns out Oliver had some sort of plan of his own and didn’t share it with her and let her think he was dead for however long…. she will NOT be happy with him. And that would be completely justified. After they have some sort of joyous reunion (one can hope anyway).
Little Thoughts
- I really loved how Oliver threw Merlyn down on the bar. Angry Oliver. Enough said.
- Did Oliver warn Roy that Thea can kick ass? Might have been a good warning…
- Ray is good at pushing boundaries. Um, showing up at Verdant after pinging her phone… again? However, the story about his dead fiancé does garner sympathy from me as it does Felicity. And also, does he blame the Arrow? Plenty of people could or would. A.T.O.M. suit? Whatevs.
- I was surprised at Dinah’s reaction to Laurel’s vow, but then realized she probably meant within the law. Really, though? Someone please tell Quentin.
- I still dislike that they have a Ray and a Roy. Too easy to get the one letter switched around.
- What’s with Laurel asking Thea to hide the fact that Laurel told her about Sara’s death from Oliver? I mean I guess I get it. She needed someone to talk to, someone to share it with. And Oliver doesn’t exactly see clearly where Thea is concerned. But still. Laurel is all about secrets these days, I guess. I wonder if Thea is the one who brings Sin back into the story now that she knows?
- I decided to stop reading reviews once I decided to write one, but I did see one comment about the Raylicity stuff feeling out of place. I kind of agree, but I think it was on purpose, so I can’t call it a negative. Because we are not as invested in Raylicity, and because of the characters themselves, the scenes struck a lighter tone, however slightly. I think was needed to balance out the rest of the episode. However, the whole “Ray can be a hero too” bit was a little bit much for me though. Hit me over the head why don’t you?
I could probably go on forever. But I will stop there. So many questions. So many feels. And tears.
January 21 is too far away!!
Quick Take: Arrow’s Mid-Season Finale, “The Climb”
Quick Take: Arrow’s Mid-Season Finale, “The Climb”
WOW . WOW. WOW. Shattering. That was one amazing 42 minutes of television. I literally could not believe they did that. I was hoping all day that I would be surprised by something. I was. I knew Oliver would be not really in the show for a couple of episodes and I knew the team might think he was dead. But I didn’t think they would ACTUALLY KILL HIM. I mean, of course, he comes back–Stephen Amell was filming tonight in fact–but that doesn’t mean he’s not dead or might as well be at the moment. And just watching that happen to him. Hard to watch. I don’t blame his mother for needing to hear his voice.
I still can’t sleep. Harrowing.
Watch this show. It is amazing. More thoughts to come.
I miss my Veronica Mars!
So I THOUGHT I was recording Veronica Mars all summer so I could re-watch the third season this fall, but apparently, the DVR was set only to save 3 episodes or something, so no luck. This leads me to the first item on my Christmas List–normally non-existent except for vague things like clothes is good, or gift cards for books :-)–the first three seasons of Veronica Mars on DVD.
The picture is for the Season One and Season Two set, but here is the link for the set including all three season, which doesn’t have an image yet. Veronica Mars: The Complete First Three Seasons.
So now I’ve watched the first three or so episodes of the third season and I only have two more (and the Season Three 2-episode finale) saved. I have no idea how it got screwed up, but my episodes will surely end in the middle of a Veronica/Logan breakup, not to mention before the rape case is solved! But I guess since the whole series ends with similar unanswered questions… ah well. And I have seen them all before.
I’ve been boycotting the CW even though Kristen Bell narrates Gossip Girl and that Reaper show seems kind of interesting. I may not have been able to resist listening to Kristen’s perfect snarky voice, but the prospect of seeing her on Heroes (hopefully soon!) has given me the necessary willpower. 🙂
And as to the question of whether Veronica Mars of Buffy the Vampire Slayer would make the best Gallagher Girl? Veronica Mars! No question. (But I may be biased considering that I never watched Buffy.) Go to this blog if you want to know what I’m talking about. Ally Carter has written a totally cool young adult series about a secret spy school for girls. Or just buy the first book: I’d Tell You I Love You, but Then I’d Have to Kill You.
Distractions galore!
I haven’t touched my writing recently (not since Labor Day weekend) and while that’s disappointing to me, I have still been thinking about SotP (Song of the Prophecy) and I think I’m working things out in my subconscious. I hope I am; otherwise this incredibly long break I’ve had has no excuse!
Anyway, I’ve found some new things to be distracted by. Some of them I think are legitimate, while others aren’t and I should attempt some discipline.
- House hunting
Yes, I’m looking to buy a house or a townhouse. I was promoted to a full time position at work, which barely allows me to afford something in the city. The problem is finding something in a suitable neighborhood. Living by myself will be an interesting experience, considering the fact that I don’t like to do dishes or laundry or clean really in any way. lol. BUT I do like to cook sometimes, so that is good. I also like to look at a number of distracting things on line such as: house listings, furniture, paint colors, bedding, Ikea kitchens, decorating advice etc. etc. - New Television Season
What is more addictive than Grey’s Anatomy? Anyway that’s my favorite show I think. Other returning shows that I love include: Desperate Housewives, Veronica Mars and House. Other returning shows that I like include: ER, Bones, L&O: SVU and NCIS. My favorite new show is Studio 60 (please watch so it doesn’t get cancelled, it’s awesome!) I also love Heros. They come on back to back. How cool is that? I’ve also been watching: Friday Night Lights, The Nine, Brothers and Sisters and Standoff. Can you way WAY TOO MUCH TV??? I can! I watch WAY TOO MUCH TV!!! And it’s even easier now that the big networks have their shows online for free (although Fox does not–boo! and neither does CW, which isn’t surprising). - booksfree.com
I have always been addicted to reading. I haven’t updated my books read list for a while, but trust me it’s now a lot longer. This year I’ve spent so much money on books I don’t even WANT to know how much it is. So joined this service that is similar to Netflicks, except that it is for books. You pay a monthly fee and you can check out up to four books at a time, but you can receive and send them back as many times as you want per month. They ship in groups of two so there’s a little bit of lag time if you’re not careful, but so far it’s worked well for me. I think I read six or seven books in October. Anyway, except for the fact that, despite the list that you keep, you can’t really control what book you get when (don’t put the 2nd book in a series on your list until they’ve mailed you the 1st), I’ve been enjoying it. I think I’ll read books I might not have read otherwise with this service.
So there you have it. My top three distractions. But not to worry; I had a new idea for a character (I can’t believe I actually started with a character) just the other day. My brain isn’t creatively dead, it’s just resting or something. I think the drive to work on SotP will come back soon enough.
